A few weeks ago Mike, Rachael, Peter, and Sophia attended the second unit leader conference put on by the UK Contingent held at Yarnfield Park. It was a chance for us to find out more about the Jamboree, what was planned for us and where we would be going! After a stress-free drive up we were ready to get started.
We started off the weekend with all leaders from the 100 units in one room. Each unit was given a mystery box, under no circumstance were we to open it.
We started off with a few facts about the jamboree like there will be nearly 45,500 people of the site from 133 countries from right across the world. After a brief introduction to how the weekend was going to work, it was time to open the box!
So it was revealed, where we would be going on our Jamboree adventure!! It’s safe to say all the leaders in the room were super excited! So to summarise where we are going:
- Fly from Gatwick
- New York City
- Hosted Hospitality
We spent the rest of the session finding out some more details about how long we would spend in each location, what activities we would be doing and how we would get between each (a lot of coaches!). Next, we all split off into various sessions and workshops to find out more about our times in the cities, the programme at the Jamboree and everyday life at the Jamboree. In one of the sessions they had a great summary of the trip too:
After the day full of sessions, we all reconvened as a group to see the kit we would all be getting from the UK Contingent, some of which is rather fetching, especially the shorts!
Next was onto the evening entertainment, with everyone suitable dressed in their best Christmas dress. It started with an inspirational talk by John May who is the Secretary General of the Duke of Edinburgh's award, he has been the Vice Chairman of the World Scout Committee and has been a unit leader at a Jamboree too. The evening continued with some Disney song bingo, a visit to Santa's Grotto, socialising with other units and some interesting moves on the dance floor!
Day 2 saw us starting off with some more workshops about safeguarding and programme. Then we all came back together to find out about our hosted hospitality location which is most likely going to be Canada (Not 100% guaranteed though). We'll spend 3 days being hosted by a local Scout group spending time exploring the local area, experiencing their Scouting and seeing what life is like there.
Thank you to the UK Contingent for putting on another fantastic weekend where we were able to find out so much more about the Jamboree. With only 7 months to go, the plans are going to come to fruition very soon, we can't wait!
